This week we have been locating and recording relevant information about threatened and endangered animals.

• What is your animal?
• What features does it have?
• Where does this animal live?
• What does it need to survive?
• What does it do in its natural habitat?
• What is the status of your selected animal? (threatened, endangered, critically endangered). Why?
• What action can be taken to improve the status of your selected animal?
• Should animals live in zoos?

What's in the news?
Newspapers have current information about endangered animals and sometimes it is good news.

Should animals live in zoos?

This question set the scene for an engaging discussion today and the children used their skills from the 'Opinion Writing' unit and they remembered to give reasons and examples to support their opinion.

The children were a little divided when answering this question.

Some children thought that the animals were well looked after and provided for in the Singapore Zoo.

Others thought that animals should always be free and never live in zoos.

Most of the children could see some positive reasons such as providing safety and healthcare for the animals that are critically endangered in their natural habitat. However, they also identified negative effects the zoo causes the animals. For example, using the animals to entertain people in unfamiliar habitats that are not suitable for particular animals.
