Mother Tongue Day

The children arrived yesterday wearing clothes that represented their cultural background and mother tongue. We began the morning with Shoken's dad, Ken, reading the children a story in Japanese. We were fascinated to see that Ken began reading the book from what we thought was the back, not the front.  Next we noticed that he was reading each page from top to bottom. We were not surprised to see the strange writing as it looks very similar to Chinese characters. 

Our next Mother Tongue presenter, Victor,  impressed the class by reading a story in Bulgarian and then translated the story into English. He read with expression and we could hear the rhyme on each page, even if we couldn't understand the meaning. He was very proud to introduce his classmates to his Mother Tongue. Congratulations Victor!

100 Days of School

Yesterday we celebrated 100 days of School. Back in August on the first day of school we started thinking and preparing for the 100th day. Each day we wrote down a fact for 100 on the 100 square and added one link to the chain. Finally on Friday we displayed our '100 Facts About One Hundred' and strung up our links across the room. Some children brought in a collection of 100 items including a poem that contained 100 words. Maths Workshop was focused on a variety of activities that related to 100. It was a celebration worth waiting for and now we will count backwards from 100.
