Singapore River Landmarks

On Tuesday 31 May we explored the Singapore River district to find landmarks. It was not a difficult task as there are so many iconic buildings, statues and bridges around this area. Here is what we found. How many of these landmarks can you identify?

ACRES Fieldtrip

Last week we went way out west to visit ACRES and meet Sponge Bob the tortoise and Stubby the snake. Grade 1 sponsor these two rescued animals and our 'Bakers for ACRES' event helped to raise money for these animals. The children met Joee who gave a presentation about illegal pet trading in the region and also talked about the how our actions affect the animals. For example, most animals in the wild are not petted and when we stroke them, even gently, they do not like it. Domestic animals, dogs and cats, like to be petted and hugged but wild animals do not. 

After the presentation we went for a tour outside to meet Sponge Bob and Stubby. We were surprised to see how many tortoises have been rescued and now reside at ACRES for the short term. We came away feeling confident that ACRES are doing everything they can to help the rescued animals.

SLEEPOVER

"It was the best night of my life!" This was a common feeling amongst the children when they woke up on Friday morning. On Thursday night they all had a fun time on the night walk around the school finding objects and pictures that connected to the 6 units that we covered this year. Fred the skeleton and Ping the gorilla were present and the children were very excited to discover them hiding in different parts of the playground. This was followed by the disco where they all danced to raise more money for ACRES. Back in class Mrs Rogers read the last chapter of 'The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark' before saying goodnight and going back home. Then the children read some of their books and settled down quite quickly for some sleep. 

The next morning breakfast was enjoyed by all the children in the canteen. The pancakes were very popular as well as the fruit. On returning to the classroom the children helped to roll up their sleeping bags and pack their bags ready for home. It was a 'Landmark Sleepover for us all.'

If you want to keep any photographs from this years blog and/or your child's digital learning journal, please do so as soon as possible because they may not be available to view at the end of June. I imagine Ken has many photographs of all the events in the 1VFo Yearbook, so if you ordered a book you will have the photographs all in one place. Thank you Ken.

If your child is leaving this week please let me know if you haven't already done so. The children will bring home all their work this week so please check inside the backpacks.
